Language Arts Review

This is a site that came with our Harcourt Series that gives practice to the language arts skills that are covered. First you have to go to this site and put in the word FARR as the password. http://www.hbschool.com/menu/principal.html?from=entrance&seriesID=6&back=/menus/language_arts.html
Fill in the rest of the blocks and then go to third grade. To practice the grammar skills go to Grammar Park and get started. The students really seem to like doing this and they are practicing their skills at the same time.

Is It Me, or Is It the Moon???

Have you ever wondered what effect the moon has on the behavior of your students?? I have pondered this often. I have this site set up to do an informal experiment. When I truely think that my students are acting random and out of character, I click on this site and it lets me see the real-time phase of the moon. You would be surprised at how many times it is full when I click on it. Go here to see the moon "as is".http://www.fourmilab.ch/cgi-bin/uncgi/Earth/action?opt=-m&img=MoonTopo.evif

This site also has other cool parts. You can click on several different satellites in space and see the Earth from different points. You can even click on a city, and see a direct overhead real time view of that part of the country. You will have to do some reading of the page to find exactly what it is you are looking for, but go here to find it. http://www.fourmilab.ch/earthview/vplanet.html

Other Useful 3rd Grade Teacher's Web Sites

Mrs. Dingman was a third grade teacher but has been moved to fifth grade. She was kind enough to leave her web site up for third grade. She has a neat page with lots of useful information. Check it out here. http://www.mrsdingman.homestead.com/home.html

Mrs. Thompson is another third grade teacher that has some useful places to visit on her site. I always find it informative to visit other teachers teaching the same grade that I teach. I get lots of new ideas here. http://www.juliethompson.com/

I'm not sure if she is third grade or not, but I find a lot of useful things here. She has gone into detail with Literature Circles and provided teachers with all of the necessary forms and graphic organizers you will need to set one up in your own classroom. She also has a lot of classroom management ideas and other things I'm sure that you could use. http://home.att.net/~teaching/filecab.htm

Mrs. Thonus has a very "busy" web page, but you may still get some ideas if you surf it close enough. You can find her here http://myschoolonline.com/site/0,1876,2486-196464-2-46994,00.html

This page takes some work to find. First click on the link below and choose faculty. Then Rhona Henson. If you go to Mrs. Henson's web site and go to her teacher resources, she has compiled essential questions for every Georgia QCC. She also has a lot more interesting things avalible. http://www.rabun.k12.ga.us/rces/index.htm

I am always looking for good third grade teacher sites, so if you know of any, please feel free to jot them down here.

Great Math Sites

These are some math sites that I like to visit. I find them very useful.

The Learning Planet is a pay to use web site, but they offer free samples. Two of the games my students like to play are Spacey Math and Math Mahem. There are also several other free samples from different grade levels and different subjects. http://members.learningplanet.com/directory/index.asp?lev=2.

Spacey Math is a game using addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. It is a one player game where the students must complete one level of skill before moving to the next. It is a timed game but has very little "fluff".

Math Mahem is a game of speed. It also drills addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. In Math Mahem, students are pitted against other students on the net in a timed drill. After the drill is complete, a ranked listing of high scorers follows. The students really get into the competition of the this game.

The Georgia Performance Standards are something we will all be living with soon. If you are curious about what to expect, and can't wait for the training to begin, click on this site and explore what is coming. It made me a little more comfortable knowing what to expect.

Go here to view the standards. http://www.georgiastandards.org/
